About this Recipe

This recipe is passed down from my beloved grandmother, who shared this recipe with me with the exception of one modification to make it vegan! Soul food is love, family, and everlasting memories.

Ingredients

  • 14 ounces vegan sausage
  • 3½ celery sticks
  • 4 tablespoons ground sage
  • 6 6-ounce pouches vegan cornbread mix (or 36 ounces of vegan cornbread mix)
  • ¼ onion
  • 1 green pepper
  • 4 cups vegetable broth
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Mix all 6 pouches together and follow directions on the back of the pouches to prepare the cornbread. Be sure to use vegan ingredients, such as plant milk and vegan egg alternatives. Make sure to multiply necessary ingredients by 6 to make this batch of cornbread since using 6 pouches.
  2. Crumble vegan sausage into a multitude of small pieces.
  3. Finely chop onions, bell peppers, and celery, then place the vegetables in a pan with the vegan sausage crumbles on medium heat with oil or a few tablespoons of broth or water to cook.
  4. Add 1 teaspoon of salt and 1 teaspoon of pepper to the pan.
  5. Once the vegan sausage crumbles are browned and veggies are softened, it is ready.
  6. Take your baked cornbread out of the pan and smash it with a big spoon until most of the big chunks in the cornbread are gone and it is only small cornbread pieces.
  7. Add 4 tablespoons of sage to your crumble cornbread.
  8. Pour your vegan sausage and vegetables inside the pan. Stir the sausage and vegetables thoroughly into the cornbread.
  9. Add 4 cups of vegetable broth to the cornbread, vegetable, and sausage mixture. Stir evenly.
  10. Distribute the dressing into two 9 inch casserole dishes or use one 13×8 family size casserole dish.
  11. Bake at 375 degrees until the dressing is golden brown on top.

Notes:

Feel free to use the vegan cornbread recipe in this resource for the batch of cornbread needed in this one. No need to multiply by 6.

Vegan gravy pairs well with this dressing!
