  • 1 cup dry yellow split pea
  • 4 cup of water
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion (diced)
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded
  • 1 tablespoons  finely minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger finely minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric
  • 1 Teaspoon sea salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

  1. Yellow split peas need to be cooked separately on stovetop.
  2. Add the water and yellow split peas in a pan and bring to a boil, then immediately lower to a simmer, place a lid on the pot and simmer.
  3. After 30-40 minutes remove the lid and check if the yellow split peas are tender; if they are not, you can cook them longer.
  4. In a pot add the oil and yellow onion and saute over medium heat for 5 to 7 minutes until the onions are tender.
  5. Add the minced garlic and ginger and saute for 30 seconds.
  6. Add turmeric and saute for 30 seconds to one minute to release the spice fragrance.
  7. Add the cooked split yellow peas and add one cup of water.
  8. Place a lid on the pot and simmer for 10 minutes.
  9. Once the yellow split peas are tender, taste the stew, adjust salt.
  10. Serve hot over Ethiopian flat bread or rice.
